After the messenger who had brought the news of the impending trouble had gone on his way, there was the sound of a voice singing.
道へ立ち帰る

(Singing) "Far from my home, on the path to Kimii Temple."
「ふるさとを、はるばるここに、紀三井寺」。

Otsuru: Alms, please. An offering for a pilgrim.
「順礼に御報謝」

Narrator: Oyumi detected a familiar accent.
と、言ふも優しき国なまり。

Oyumi: Here, sweet pilgrim, is my offering to you.
「テモしほらしい順礼衆、ドレドレ報謝進じょう」と、

Narrator: Oyumi gives her some rice.
盆に白米(しらげ)の志、
【8】
Otsuru: Thank you.
「アイアイ、ありがとうござります」
【9】
Narrator: Oyumi is charmed by the girl.
と、言う物腰からつまはずれ、

Oyumi: Such a lovely girl. You must be traveling with your parents. Where are you from?
「マ可愛らしい娘の子、定めて連れ衆は親御たち、国はいづく」と尋ねられ、

Otsuru: My home is Tokushima in Awa Province.
「アイ、国は阿波の徳島でござります」

Oyumi: Tokushima? That brings back memories. I was also born in Tokushima.
「何じゃ徳島、さってもそれは、マア懐しい。わしが生れも阿波の徳島、
【13】
Are your parents with you?
そして父さんや母さんと一緒に順礼さんすのか」

Otsuru: No. They are not with me. Because I want to find my parents,
「イエイエ、その父さんや母さんに逢いたさ故、
【15】
I am on this pilgrimage to the 33 temples alone.
それでわし一人、西国するのでござります」

Narrator: Hearing this, Oyumi begins to wonder. She leans in closer.
と、聞いてどうやら気にかかる。お弓はなおもそばに寄り、

Oyumi: In search of your father and a mother on this pilgrimage? What do you mean? Please tell me!
「ム、父さんや母さんに逢いたさに、西国するとはどうした訳じゃ、それが聞きたい、言うて聞かしゃ、言うて聞かしゃ」

Otsuru: I don't know why, but when I was 3 years old, my father and mother left me with my grandmother and went away.
「アイ、どうした訳じゃ知らぬが、三つの年に、父さんや母さんも、わしをばばさんに預けて、どこへやら行かしゃんしたげな。
【19】
My grandmother raised me, but still I long to find my father and mother. I want to meet them, to see their faces.
それでわたしはばばさんの世話になっていたけれど、どうぞ父さんや母さんに逢いたい、顔が見たい。

So, I walk, door to door, seeking them.
それで方々と、尋ねて歩くのでござります」

Oyumi: What are your parents' names?
「ムヽ、シテその親達の名は何というぞいの」

Otsuru: My father's name is Jurobe of Awa. My mother's name is Oyumi.
「アイ、父さんの名は十郎兵衛、母さんはお弓と申します」

Narrator: Oyumi is astonished by what she hears.
と、聞いてびっくり、

Oyumi: (to herself) Her father is named Jurobe and her mother is Oyumi.
『アヽコレコレ、アノ父さんは十郎兵衛、母さんはお弓、
【25】
Separated from them at the age of three and raised by her grandmother. There's no doubt--this girl is my daughter.
三つの年別れて、ばばさんに育てられていたとは、マ疑いもない我が娘』

Narrator: The more closely she looked at the young face, the clearer it became.
と、見れば見るほど幼顔、
【27】
She had the same birthmark on her forehead. "Oh, my dear child, I've missed you," she wanted to say.
見覚えのある額のほくろ、『ヤレわが子か、懐しや』と言わんとせしが、
【28】
But the couple is about to be arrested by the authorities and put to death.
『待て暫し。夫婦は今も取らるる命、もとより覚悟の身なれども、
【29】
If they found out that this girl was their child, she too would suffer the same miserable fate.
親子と言わばこの子にまで、どんな憂き目がかかるやら、
【30】
Rather than revealing her identity and putting the child in danger,
それを思へばなま中に、名乗り立てして憂き目を見んより、
【31】
it would be better for the girl if Oyumi said nothing and left matters as they were.
名乗らでこのまま帰すのが、かえってこの子がためならん』と、
【32】
Oyumi calms her own heart and tries to treat the girl as a stranger.
心を静めよそよそしく。

Oyumi: How impressive, visiting from such a distance place at your young age.
「オヽそれはまあまあ、年端も行かぬにはるばるの所を、よう尋ねに出さしゃったのう。

If your parents knew about it, they would probably leap with happiness.
その親達が聞いてなら、さぞ嬉しうて嬉しうて飛立つ、サア、飛立つようにあろうが、

But things in this world don't turn out the way one wishes.
ままならぬが世の憂きふし。

The pain your parents must have felt, abandoning a sweet, young daughter
身にも命にもかえて、
【37】
who is more important than anything and leaving their home.
可愛い子を振り捨て、国を立ち退く親御の心。

It must have been of something important that required such caution.
よくよくの事であらう程に、
【39】
Your parents have been cruel, but you should not bear a grudge toward them.
むごい親と必ず必ず恨まぬがよいぞや」

Otsuru: No, Ma'am. What grudge would I have? I resent nothing.
「イエイエもったいない、何の恨みましょう。恨みる事はないけれど、

Being separated at a young age, I do not even remember their faces.
小さい時別れたれば、父様や母様の顔も覚えず、

When I saw other girls with their mothers fixing their hair
よその子供衆が、母様に髪結うてもろうたり、
【43】
and that night sleeping in their mothers arms, I felt envious.
夜は抱かれて寝やしゃんすを見ると、
【44】
If I too had a mother she would fix my hair like that.
わしも母様があるならあの様に髪結うてもらおうものと、うらやましうござんす。

O how I want to find them! O, how sad when I think I might never find them.
どうぞ早う尋ねて逢いたい、ひょっと逢われまいかと思えば、それが悲しうござんす」

Narrator: Oyumi begins to sob. How pitiful! Oyumi feels agony in her heart .
と、泣いぢゃくりするいぢらしさ、母は心も消え入る思い、

Oyumi: There is no bond more profound in this world than between parent and child.
「さてもさても世の中に、親となり子と生まるる程、深い縁はなけれどもナア、（なけれどもナア）

The parents may die, or the child may go first. this world is not always what we wish it to be. That is how this sad world is.
親が死んだり子が先立ったり、思う様にならぬが浮世、

And, no matter how much you search, without knowing their faces or where they live,
こなたもどれ程尋ねても、顔も所も知らぬ親達、
【50】
it may be impossible to find them. Perhaps you should return home to Tokushima.
逢われぬ時は詮ない事。もう尋ねずと、国へいんだがよいわいの」

Otsuru: No. I yearn for my father and mother. No matter how long it may take, I will search for them.
「イエイエ、恋しい父様や母様、たとえいつまでかかってなと、尋にょうと思うけれど、

One sad thing is because I am traveling alone, no inn will let me stay.
悲しい事は一人旅ぢゃてて、どこの宿でも泊めてはくれず、

So, sometimes I sleep in the fields or in the woods or hide under the eaves of people's houses.
野に寝たり、山に寝たり、人の軒の下に寝ては、

Sometimes they beat me as they shoo me away.
た、た、叩かれたり。

In those frightening moments, I think, if my father and mother were with me these things would not happen.
怖い事や悲しい事も、父様や母様と一所にいたりゃ、こんな目には逢うまいものを、

(Aside) Where could you be? And how are you doing? I want to find you! I want to see you!
何処にどうしていやしゃんすぞ。逢いたい事ぢゃ、逢いたい事ぢゃ、逢いたい」

Narrator: Oyumi can scarcely endure the sight of her daughter crying.
と、わっと泣き出す娘より、見る母親はたまりかね、

Oyumi: Oh, you poor child!
「オヽ道理ぢゃ、可愛や、いぢらしや」

Narrator: Oyumi embraces her daughter, cursing the need she has to hide her own identity.
と、我を忘れて抱き付き、前後正体嘆きしが。

Oyumi: (aside) The more I hear, the more miserable it makes me.
「オヽ段々の様子を聞き、我が身の様に思われて、悲しいとも情ないとも、

I want to tell her, but I cannot. Anyway, her life must be spared.
言ふに言われぬ事ながら、とかく命が物種。
【62】
As long as she is healthy and alive, we could perhaps meet again.
まめでさえいりゃ、又逢われまいものでもない。

(to Otsuru) It is a rough journey. One could fall ill. Instead of searching, return to your grandmother.
コレ、仕付けぬ旅に身を痛め、わずらいでも出りゃ悪い。何処をしょうどに尋にょうより、その婆様の方へ去んでいるとノ、

Perhaps your father and mother will come back home.
追付け父様や母様が逢いにいてぢゃ程に、悪い事は言わぬ、悪い事は言わぬ、

That would be best. I'm telling you what's good for you.
なんの又このおばが、わが身の為にならぬ事を言うてよいものか、わが身の為にならぬ事を言うてよいものかいの。

Reconsider your plans. Go home at once and wait for your parents.
思い直して、これから直ぐに国へ去んで、随分まめで親達の尋ねて行かしゃるを待っているのがよいぞや」

Narrator: Going to her sewing box, Oyumi takes out some coins and wraps them in paper.
と言いつつ内へ針箱の、底を探して豆板の、まめなを喜ぶはなむけと、紙に包んで持って出で。

Oyumi: Here. Even if you travel alone, if you have enough money, the inns will let you stay.
「コレ、何ぼ一人旅でも、たんと銭さえやりゃ泊める。
【69】
It's not much, but use this for your travel expenses and hurry back home.
わずかなれども志、この金を路銀にして、早う国へ去にや、ヤ、必ず必ずわずろうてばしたもんな」

Narrator: Oyumi hands her the money, but Otsuru pushes it back.
と、金を渡せば押し戻し、

Otsuru: I'm grateful, but I have plenty.
「アイ、嬉しうござんすれど、金は小判といふものを、たんと持っております。

I will be going now. Thank you for your help.
そんなりゃもうさんじます、かたじけのうござります」

Narrator: Oyumi stops the weeping girl as she tries to leave.
と、泣く泣く立つを引きとどめ、

Narrator: Oyumi forces her to take the money. She brushes the dust from the girl's clothes.
無理に持たして塵打ち払い、
【75】
Oyumi: Oh, I do not want you to leave! Let me see your face again. Once more!
「コレ、もう去にゃるか、名残りが惜しい、別れとむない、コレ、ま一度顔を」

Narrator: Oyumi pulls Otsuru toward her.
と引き寄せて、

The more she looks at the girl the more tormenting it becomes to let her go.
見れば見る程胸迫り、離れ難なき憂き思い、

Though Otsuru did not know it, the bond she felt was truly one of blood. Reluctant to leave, Otsuru glances back.
それと知らねど誠の血筋、名残り惜げに振返り、
【79】
Otsuru: Oh, where should I go to find my parents? O blessed Kannon, Goddess of Mercy, help me.
「どこをどうして尋ねたら、父様や母様に、逢われる事ぞ、逢わしてたべ、南無大悲の観音様」

(singing a pilgrim's song) "Profound is the blessing of the love of parents, at Kokawa Temple."
父母の、恵みも深き粉川寺、

Narrator: Otsuru weeps as she leaves.
泣く泣く別れ行く跡を、

Oyumi extends her hand as she watches her daughter walk away.
見送り見送り延び上り、
【83】
Oyumi: Dear child, turn your face to me once more, just once more!
「コレ娘、ま一度こちら向いてたも、ま一度こちら向いてたもいの。

Narrator: The sweet child suffered hardship, crossing the sea and mountains, longing for her parents.
折角長の海山越え、艱難してあこがれ尋ぬるいとし子に、

She and her mother did indeed mysteriously meet.
不思議と逢いは逢いながら、
【86】
But unable to reveal herself, how should this mother feel? She is half crazed with deadly sorrow.
名乗らでいなす母が気は、どの様にあろうと思う、狂気半分、半分は死んでいるわいの。

Oyumi: As a mother, should I send this child ahead on the road? She has a future.
まだ生い先のある子をば、親ゆえ路頭に立たすか」と、

Narrator: Right there, she fell to the floor, lamenting the loss of her daughter.
そのままそこにどうと伏し、消え入るばかり嘆きしが。

But then she lifted herself and dried her tears.
起き直って涙を押え、
【90】
Oyumi: No, no. If I give up now and let my child go, I will never see her again.
「イヤイヤ、どう思いあきらめても、今別れては又逢う事はならぬ身の上、

My husband will think of something if we encounter difficulty.
たとえ難儀がかからばかかれ、又その時は夫の思案、
【92】
She must not have gone far. I'll catch up with her and bring her back! Yes, I will!
程は行くまい追付いて、連れて戻ろう。そうじゃ、そうじゃ」

Narrator: Bewildered by her child, she follows the path of parent and child. It is but a path that leads to separation.
と子に迷う、道は親子の別れ道、

Longing for her daughter, Oyumi runs after her.
後を慕うて、尋ねいく。

Otsuru: Oh, where should I go to find my parents? O blessed Kannon, Goddess of Mercy, help me.
「どこをどうして尋ねたら、父様や母様に、逢われる事ぞ、逢わしてたべ、南無大悲の観音様」

(singing a pilgrim's song) "Profound is the blessing of the love of parents, at Kokawa Temple."
父母の、恵みも深き粉川寺、

Narrator: Otsuru weeps as she leaves.
泣く泣く別れ行く跡を、

Oyumi extends her hand as she watches her daughter walk away.
見送り見送り延び上り、

Oyumi: Dear child, turn your face to me once more, just once more!
「コレ娘、ま一度こちら向いてたも、ま一度こちら向いてたもいの。

Narrator: The sweet child suffered hardship, crossing the sea and mountains, longing for her parents.
折角長の海山越え、艱難してあこがれ尋ぬるいとし子に、

She and her mother did indeed mysteriously meet.
不思議と逢いは逢いながら、

But unable to reveal herself, how should this mother feel? She is half crazed with deadly sorrow.
名乗らでいなす母が気は、どの様にあろうと思う、狂気半分、半分は死んでいるわいの。

Oyumi: As a mother, should I send this child ahead on the road? She has a future.
まだ生い先のある子をば、親ゆえ路頭に立たすか」と、

Narrator: Right there, she fell to the floor, lamenting the loss of her daughter.
そのままそこにどうと伏し、消え入るばかり嘆きしが。

But then she lifted herself and dried her tears.
起き直って涙を押え、

Oyumi: No, no. If I give up now and let my child go, I will never see her again.
「イヤイヤ、どう思いあきらめても、今別れては又逢う事はならぬ身の上、

My husband will think of something if we encounter difficulty.
たとえ難儀がかからばかかれ、又その時は夫の思案、

She must not have gone far. I'll catch up with her and bring her back! Yes, I will!
程は行くまい追付いて、連れて戻ろう。そうじゃ、そうじゃ」

Narrator: Bewildered by her child, she follows the path of parent and child. It is but a path that leads to separation.
と子に迷う、道は親子の別れ道、

Longing for her daughter, Oyumi runs after her.
後を慕うて、尋ねいく。
